Programme Notes

'Go, tell it on the Mountain' is an African-American spiritual song, compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr., dating back to at least 1865. The text is traditional, the tune similarly so, though Work may have contributed to the latter.

It is considered a Christmas carol because its original refrain celebrates the nativity of Jesus: 'Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.'

The text that Corp uses for the first verse is the same as in the SATB version, but the second verse refers more overtly to the nativity:

When I was a seeker,
I sought both night and day.
I asked the Lord to help me,
And He showed me the way.

Shepherds kept their watching
O'er wand'ring flocks by night:
Behold, from out of heaven,
There shone a holy sight.

Jesus Christ is born.

This is an easy and tuneful setting, and sure to appeal to chidren's and amateur upper voice choirs.

This is the version in two parts for upper voices. To see the SATB version, click here.
